Your first massage: what to expect and aftercare

A first massage should begin with a clear conversation, not guesswork. We confirm the selected service, areas to include or avoid, pressure preference and relevant health information before treatment starts.

At a glance

What matters most

  • You decide the agreed treatment areas and can ask to pause or stop.
  • Pressure should be adjusted through communication, not endured silently.
  • Simple hydration, gentle movement and attention to unusual symptoms are sensible afterwards.

Before the treatment begins

Arrive with enough time for a short consultation. Explain the main reason for booking, pressure preference, areas you do not want treated and relevant health information. Avoid a heavy meal immediately beforehand if that would make lying down uncomfortable.

The practical setup and clothing or draping are explained for the chosen service. Only the agreed area should be uncovered as needed, and you can ask questions or change your mind about an area.

During the massage

Give feedback about pressure, temperature and positioning. The practitioner cannot reliably infer whether pressure feels constructive, uncomfortable or sharply painful. Speaking up allows the treatment to be adjusted.

  • Say when pressure is too strong or too light.
  • Mention numbness, tingling, dizziness or sharp pain immediately.
  • Ask to pause or stop whenever you need to.

After the appointment

Stand up gradually, drink according to your normal needs and keep the rest of the day comfortable where possible. Some people prefer gentle movement after massage; strenuous activity is not required to make the treatment effective.

Do not assume significant pain, weakness, persistent dizziness or worsening symptoms are normal aftercare. Seek appropriate healthcare advice when something feels concerning.

Common questions

Before you book

Do I have to remove all my clothing?

No. The setup depends on the service and your comfort. It is explained beforehand, agreed boundaries are respected and appropriate draping is used.

Should I talk during the massage?

You can be quiet, but always communicate about pressure, pain, temperature, positioning or a need to stop.

Is soreness always normal afterwards?

Responses vary, but significant, worsening or persistent pain should not be dismissed as proof that the massage worked. Seek appropriate advice if concerned.
